When Viewbank and Rosanna Tennis Clubs decided to create a combined Twilight Ladies tennis program, they could not have imagined the enthusiasm for the program they have seen in the last six weeks.

Every Monday, women from throughout Banyule descend on the club for an evening of friendly social play, followed by a light supper expertly prepared by the clubs’ volunteers.

With coaching available for those who are picking up a racquet for the first time, there is a court available for ladies of every ability.

With a well-established Men’s Twilight tennis competition that has been run for over half a century, Viewbank were keen to create a Ladies’ program too. And having applied for and received a Tennis Victoria ACE grant, they combined efforts with Rosanna and put their vision into action.

Expecting around eight to ten participants in their first week, they were stunned to see that over thirty women had registered for the very first session.

Viewbank Tennis Club secretary Sylvia Watson is thrilled to see that the program has been so well received, and is thankful to see the program successfully established with the assistance of ACE grant funding.

“To help us be able to pay for coaches to help with the women who have never played before, even to help with covering light expenses and providing suppers, the cost of the balls as well… it’s been great and the ladies really appreciate it.”

There is certainly a hunger for the Monday nights to continue amongst the playing group, with players appreciating the coaching efforts and opportunity to play socially again.

Tennis Victoria’s Women and Girls Coordinator, Fairlie Lamond was enraptured by a program that so keenly encourages the participation of women in sport.

“The evening really does cater for all abilities with the coaches nurturing of the beginners in not only how to hit the ball, but also guidance of how to play, where to stand, how to score.  The more experienced players, playing matches, swapping partners and generally enjoying being together in our sport.”

“The club is upfront in admitting that they are not the experts, but are willing to try things, to ask the participants what they want, what they like and massage the program into what it is. That is why it is a success.”

You can join the terrific ladies at Viewbank Tennis Club for the next three Monday nights, including the upcoming Labour Day public holiday. Registrations are essential – click here to book your spot!
