The greatest community sporting event has come to a close with the culmination of the VCTA Country Week 2016 event in Wodonga and Albury on Friday.

191 teams comprising 1500 players competed in the event across 23 grades using 90 permanent and temporary grass courts. The stories of the week of tennis, fun, friendships and competition will be remembered for years to come. View photo album.

Pat Flynn (Wangaratta) played in his 53rd Country Week having competed at every event, excluding two, since 1962. He missed one due to a dust storm in Melbourne and another that was hosted in Benalla that at the time he and his teammates thought was too close to home.

The Sunbury Sippers, comprising players from three generations with mum June playing with her daughter Jodie and Jodie’s daughter Maddie, won their first Country Week title in the C5 ladies division. To celebrate they emulated Jim Courier by jumping in the river.

The Ballarat Bilbys, with an average team age of 77, are looking forward to next year’s event in Yarrawonga when they will celebrate their 20th anniversary of attending.

The Lecontes and Tandara took out the A Grade sections with both matches going down to the wire. Going into the final set, Mud Island only needed four games to win. At two all they only needed another two but The Lecontes weren’t backing down going on to win the set 8-2 and the title overall.
