Wayne Arthurs Cup
The 10/u Wayne Arthurs Cup was a tightly contested affair, with North Suburban Junior Tennis Association defeating Bayside-Moorabbin 4-35 to 2-34.
64 children from regional Victorian and metropolitan Melbourne took part in the mixed 10/u teams’ event at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club over the weekend.
Making the event extra special was the ‘guest appearance’ by the Australian Open trophies on Saturday morning. Photos from the event can be found on Tennis Victoria’s Facebook page.
December Showdown
It was a big week at the December Showdown, with the Australian Open wildcard play-off, the 12s team event and the 16s event all on last week.
Wildcard Play-off
Marinko Matosevic is set to compete against the world’s best after claiming a place in the main draw of Australian Open 2012. Matosevic earned his spot following a straight sets victory over fifth seed James Duckworth 6-4 6-1 6-2.
“It’s a great opportunity, an honour and a privilege to get into a Grand Slam tournament by winning this,” said Matosevic, who will make his third Australian Open appearance.
In the women’s, defending champion Olivia Rogowska made the final of the play-off, coming up against 15 year-old Asheligh Barty from Queensland. Rogowska started the match well, going up 3-0, before losing in straight sets, 7-6(6) 6-2.

Eliza Long won the girls’ national title at the Optus 16s Australian Championships, defeating wildcard Brigitte Beck 7-5 6-3. As the winner of the event, Long will receive a wildcard into the main draw of the Australian Open Junior Championships and Loy Yang Traralgon Junior ITF International in 2012.
12s Team Event
In the girls’ competition, second seeds Victoria defeated fourth seeds China to take the Margaret Court Cup.
In the final, Jaimee Fourlis came out firing in the opening rubber, defeating Zhao Lee 7-6 6-2. Tang Qian Hui struck back for the team from China with a 6-4 6-1 win over Vivian Fidantsis to level the tie at one rubber apiece. But in the doubles, the Victorians grabbed an early lead and rode it to victory with a 6-1 6-4 win, with Stephanie Serafidis and Fourlis joining forces to defeat Lee and Qian Hui.
In the Rod Laver Cup for boys, Victoria made the final, but lost to New South Wales 0-1-19 to 2-4-28.
National Tennis League – Victorian Division
Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club has made a clean sweep of the National Tennis League – Victorian Division, winning both the men’s and women’s finals this afternoon.
The men’s team beat Dingley Tennis Club convincing, 6-12-64 to 0-1-20, while the women’s match was a much tighter affair, with Kooyong winning by just two games.
Both men’s and women’s teams will now have the opportunity to play in the national play-off during the second week of Australian Open 2012 to determine the national champion teams. Final scores.
