Two blockbuster all-Australian match ups will highlight men’s first round action at the Canberra International tomorrow.

Third seed Jordan Thompson (NSW) will be second on centre court in arguably the match of the day as he takes on former World No. 39 Marinko Matosevic (Vic). The New South Welshman is in top form coming off finals appearances at the Latrobe City Traralgon Challenger last week and at the Vietnam Open in early October. While Matosevic has fought a string of injuries in 2015, he is returning to form late in the season and will ensure this is a top quality match.

2014 US Open Boys Singles and Doubles champion Omar Jasika (Vic) faces a tough task in his first round match, with Thompson’s conqueror in Traralgon and tournament second seed, Matthew Ebden (WA), his opponent. Jasika has continued on from his history-making 2014 with two Futures titles this year, while Ebden is just eight ranking spots away from returning to the Top 100 for the first time since 2009.

Top seed John Millman (Qld) will start the days play on centre court against qualifier Blake Mott (NSW).

Today’s action was highlighted by two upset wins by Canberra locals in the doubles. James Frawley (ACT) teamed up with Tasmania’s Harry Bourchier to knock out Matosevic and Robin Stanek (CZE) in a super tiebreak, advancing 7-6(4) 4-6 [10-5]. In women’s action, 15-year-old Kaitlin Staines (ACT), playing in her first Australian Pro Tour event, and Kaylah McPhee (Qld) won through to the main draw with a 2-6 7-5 [10-3] comeback win in qualifying over Alan Parnaby (Vic) and Angelique Svinos (NSW).

Staines and McPhee will be in action again tomorrow while Alison Bai (ACT) will start her doubles campaign with Lin Zhang (HKG) in the afternoon.

Entry to the Canberra Tennis Centre is free with play starting at 10am on Tuesday.
