The Victorian Community Tennis Awards recognise Victoria’s on and off court success in a community tennis celebration. Congratulations to the following finalists for the Excellence in Officiating award!
Anthony Warland
Tony Warland has made a significant contribution to tennis officiating through his expertise, leadership, and commitment to inclusion. As an ITF White Badge Referee, he brings extensive experience to events, particularly those involving players with diverse needs.
During the 2025–2026 period, Tony officiated at the Australian Open events for players with intellectual disabilities and for deaf and hard of hearing players. These competitions represent some of the highest-level opportunities globally in these categories, and his appointment reflects both his capability and the trust placed in his judgement.
Tony is known for applying rules with purpose. He views them as tools to achieve fair and positive outcomes, allowing him to manage complex situations effectively while maintaining consistency across all participants. His ability to adapt his communication and approach—particularly when working with players who require specific support—ensures competitions are both inclusive and well-managed.
He also plays a key role in supporting officiating teams. Tony provides clear, practical guidance and helps officials navigate challenging situations while maintaining confidence in decision-making and process. His combination of technical knowledge, situational awareness, and calm leadership consistently lifts the standard of events he oversees.
Within the officiating community, Tony is a highly respected mentor. He offers direct, constructive feedback focused on improvement and regularly shares his insights with developing officials. His willingness to engage, even beyond match hours, reinforces his commitment to building capability across the officiating pathway.
Beyond events, Tony contributes to broader conversations on governance, transparency, and officiating standards. His ongoing advocacy and leadership reflect a strong commitment to the long-term strength of officiating in Victoria and Australia.
Through his professionalism, inclusive approach, and dedication to others, Tony Warland continues to set a high standard for officiating at all levels.
Di Larkin
With more than 40 years of service, Di has made a lasting contribution to Australian tennis officiating. Her career has spanned roles as a line umpire, chair umpire, and now Chief of Officials, consistently delivering at the highest level both locally and internationally. Her experience includes officiating Wimbledon finals as a line umpire and serving as Deputy Chief of Officials at the Australian Open, establishing her as one of the most respected officials in the country.
Over the past 12 months, Di has continued to perform at elite and grassroots levels. She has served as Deputy Chief of Officials at the Australian Open, Chief of Officials at WTA events in India, and contributed to the ITF World Tennis Tour event in Wodonga as both Chief of Officials and Court Supervisor during qualifying. She has also supported the development of officials as an educator in the Chair Umpire Pathway Program.
Di’s commitment is reflected in her willingness to contribute beyond her formal role. At the Wodonga ITF event in her hometown, she not only led as Chief but also assisted as a Court Supervisor, helped transport officials, supported ballkid recruitment, and oversaw training. These actions demonstrate her practical leadership and focus on ensuring the success of the entire event.
She is widely recognised for her ability to identify what is needed and step in to support both the event and the officiating team. Her approach reflects a broader commitment to servicing the sport, maintaining high standards, and supporting others to succeed.
As an Internationally Certified Chief of Officials, Di continues to be selected for major events, including recent appointments at WTA tournaments, ATP/WTA events in Canberra, and upcoming leadership at the Billie Jean King Cup in Melbourne. Despite her international commitments, she remains actively involved in supporting and developing officials in Victoria.
Di’s career is defined by consistency, professionalism, and a strong commitment to giving back to the officiating community. Her leadership and example continue to set the benchmark for officials at all levels.
Margaret Etta
Margaret has been a dedicated Chair Umpire for over 15 years, known for her professionalism, accuracy, and strong understanding of the game. As a White Badge official, she applies the rules with confidence, fairness, and consistency, delivering reliable performances across all levels of competition.
On court, Margaret is recognised for her calm and composed presence. She manages matches smoothly, even in high-pressure situations, making clear and measured decisions while maintaining a respectful approach with players and colleagues. Her ability to defuse tension and maintain control ensures matches run efficiently and fairly.
Her experience extends to the international stage, including officiating at the French Open, where she was selected as a Line Umpire for a final. This reflects the high level of trust in her accuracy, focus, and ability to perform at elite events.
Off court, Margaret is a committed mentor and role model. She actively supports the development of other officials, sharing her knowledge and providing practical, constructive guidance. Her approachable manner makes her a trusted figure for developing chair umpires, and she plays an important role in encouraging more women to pursue officiating pathways.
Margaret’s consistency, experience, and leadership make her a valued contributor to officiating, setting a strong example for others at both community and professional levels.
