The 83rd annual ACT Residents Championships will take place in Lyneham from 9-11 December 2016.

Over 100 players are expected to converge upon the Canberra Tennis Centre in one of the only events dedicated to the local tennis community.

Each year, the tournament gives local players, both junior and senior, the opportunity to showcase their talent and play competitive friendly matches with family and friends at one of the best tennis venues in the country.

2015 ACT Residents Championships men’s singles defending champion, Daniel Green, said he has enjoyed his tennis experience for the past five years, on and off the court.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing the Residents and supporting local tennis,” he said. “The Residents usually attracts a lot of the pennant players that I play with and against throughout the year, and tends to have a more relaxed environment than some of the other tournaments.”

Green continued “Residents provides local players of all levels an opportunity to compete against their peers but also catch-up with each other off the court.”

The tournament was initiated in 1933 by the Council of the Federal Capital Lawn Tennis Association to celebrate the opening of the Manuka Tennis Courts Pavilion. The championships have been held ever since, with the exception of 1942-1945 during World War II.

Former champions include eight time men’s singles winner, Bruce Larkham, and current 55+ world No. 1 and eight time ACT residents women’s singles title holder, Ros Balodis.

Tournament director Jake Lalliard encouraged all Canberrans to take part or support the renowned event.

“The tournament has always had a great atmosphere, with so many different ages and standards playing at the one venue,” he said.

“With a range of different formats, the tournament gives players such an enjoyable and fun experience, playing competitive tennis against other locals.”

This year, the tournament will offer singles, doubles, and mixed doubles across the three day event, with players able to participate in one or all three events.

Any ACT resident from 8 to 80+ years old is welcome to take part.
