Queensland’s Ben Mitchell has completed a dream week in the Capital after fighting back from a set down to claim the Canberra Tennis International title in three sets over Luke Saville (SA).

There wasn’t much in the first set, with Saville’s serve the difference between the two players. The South Australian fired down four aces to Mitchell’s one to take the early lead 7-5.

Despite a niggling injury that seemed to hamper Saville in the second and third sets, Mitchell rose to another level, converting five of his six break points to claim his biggest professional win, 5-7 6-0 6-1.

It is the first ATP singles title of the 22-year-olds career, with the Queenslander previously having won two doubles titles.

In the women’s final, Asia Muhammad (USA) got one back on her doubles conqueror of yesterday, defeating Japan’s Eri Hozumi 6-4 6-3.

Muhammad looked to be cruising through the first set, serving at 5-1 before Hozumi reeled off three straight games to get it back on serve at 5-4. The second seed couldn’t make the most of her chances though, dropping serve and the first set 6-4.

The second set was all Muhammad, the American World No. 368 winning 74% of her first serve points to claim her biggest title of the year.

The men’s doubles final between all-Aussie pair Alex Bolt (SA) and Andrew Whittington (Vic) looked like it may go the distance after a tight opening set. The duo traded breaks with Brydan Klein (GBR) and Dane Propoggia (NSW) before eventually pulling through in a tiebreak.

It was smooth sailing in the second however, with Whittington serving out the match on a sudden death point at deuce to take the title 7-6(2) 6-3.
