ACT’s Dimitri Morogiannis has won his first ITF junior title after defeating Jeremy Taylor in the final of the Canberra Junior International held at the Canberra Tennis Centre today. In the girls singles, Violet Apisah, proved too strong for Kaitlin Staines, winning in straight sets. The Grade 5 ITF event had junior world ranking points on offer, with all four finalists expected to rise up the rankings.

Going into today’s boy’s final, neither Morogiannis nor Taylor had dropped a set all week. The first set was a closely contested battle, with both players having their opportunities. At 6-6 it headed into a tiebreak, with Morogiannis coming out on top 7-4. In the second Morogiannis got out to an early lead and never looked back taking it 6-2.

In the girls final, top seed Violet Apisah took on number two seed Kaitlin Staines. The girls are currently ranked 2 and 3 in Australia in the 15 year age group and both had come through tough three set matches yesterday. Apisah got off to a quick start, taking the first set 6-2. Scores remained level early in the second set, but Apisah lifted her game to win the second set 6-3.

In the boy’s doubles, top seeds Benard Nkomba and Mayez Elrich were convincing in their win over Jeremy Taylor and Chase Ferguson 6-3, 6-1. In the girl’s doubles Staines combined with Canberra’s Imogen Clews to defeat Apisah and Canberra Velocity player Maria Vais, 6-4, 6-4.
