ACT Tennis Academy Scholarship holders James Frawley and Nick Kyrgios have shown they have what it takes to compete at the highest international level after displaying outstanding performances over the past 2 weeks.

Frawley, 17, of O’Connor, won the 18/U International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior event held in Ipswich, Queensland.  Frawley, seeded No.4 in the event, defeated No.2 seed Jack Schipanski from SA and No.1 seed Jordan Thompson from NSW in the semi-final and final respectively.  It was the biggest win of his career so far and his first ever ITF title and will propel his World Junior ranking inside the top 200.

“ I played my best tennis of the week in the semi’s and the final” said Frawley, who earlier in the event defeated some overseas players. “  I love these clay courts and was ripping the ball with plenty of spin and then finishing off the points really well. It is a great feeling to take out my first singles ITF title”.

Meanwhile Nick Kyrgios , 16 of Watson, lead the Australian Junior Davis Cup Team (16/U) to victory in the Asia/Oceania qualifying event held in Delhi, India over the past 3 weeks. The Australian team of Kyrgios, Thanasi Kokkinakis (SA) and Blake Mott (NSW) did not lose a single match in the event, where they defeated the No.1 seeds Japan in the final.

Kyrgios was undefeated, playing in the No.1 singles position against high quality opponents in this prestigious international event.  He continued his recent good form in Asia, which has seen him move to No.75 on the world junior rankings and No.5 in the world for players born in 1995.

Kyrgios said conditions were very tough in India “ It was so hot and humid and we all battled the conditions and the at some stage we all felt a bit sick over the 2 weeks,  so it was great to come through undefeated. I was really happy with my form, I played aggressively and executed my shots really well”

ACT Academy Head Coach Todd Larkham praised the boys “ Both James and Nick have been in the Academy for 5 years now and have worked extremely hard over this period to improve their tennis.  Tennis is an extremely tough international sport and for these boys to be highly competitive in the world in the 18/U category  is a credit to them both”

“ This is also a real credit to James’   coach Alun Jones (assistant ACT Academy Coach) and the ACT Academy physical trainers David Briggs and Alex Hynes. These guys put in a huge amount of hours with these boys”.
