The final day of the Junior Open finished today with an all ACT 12 boys final.

Twelve-year-old Dimitri Morogiannis was the most hungry for the win, beating his doubles partner and fellow Canberra local, Patrick Wielemborek in straight sets.

Morogiannis was challenged in the second set having been up 3-0 with Wielemborek coming back to be ahead 4-3.

With some determination Morogiannis turned the match back in his favour winning 6-1, 6-4.

“I was so hungry for it,” Morogiannis said.  “I said to myself I need to win this, and I did.

“It’s the first tournament that I have won and it’s a happy feeling.

“I am relieved that I won a tournament in the ACT because all the coaches will know that I won and it’s my home state,” added Morogiannis.

Wielemborek was upset with the loss but was happy with his performance in the second set.

“I’ve lost to Dimitri before in the consolation final last year,” Wielemborek said. “I think I’ve improved but I am kind of sad.”

“I just like hitting the ball and trying my best.  I’ve started to get more aggressive and my technique was much better in the second set,” he said.

The boys joined forces in the doubles but lost in the semi final to Victorians Joshua Charlton and Jack Clements who went on to win the final.

Tournament Director, Lenka Marecek, said the tournament was a great success despite contending with interstate competitions.

“The tournament went really well,” she said.  “Numbers were a little bit down from last year because there were other events on at the same time, which is a bit unfortunate.

“It means the schedules went through really easily because there weren’t as many players, but the competition has still been to a high standard.

“It was great to see the ACT competitors performing well, particularly the boys in the under 12’s final, but it’s also good to see teams from other states making the trek to Canberra and having a great time,” she added.
