Canberra has now hosted three Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) tournaments, with a growing number of participants competing in each event.

With Australian ranking tournaments on hold, the UTR events are providing players with the opportunity to gain competitive matches in a local environment.  Player enter and are seeded on their latest available Universal Tennis Rating (UTR).  The UTR system rates all players – professional, collegiate, junior and recreational – on the same 16-point scale, regardless of age, gender or location.

The rating is calculated based on a player’s 30 most recent results within the past 12 months, the number of games they win in those matches, and the strength of their opposition.

The draws features both male and female players of all ages and aims to provide competitive matches for all players.  Currently only players from the ACT and surrounding region can participate in Canberra events, but the UTR events allow players of every level the chance to play locally with the results counting globally.

Tennis ACT Tournaments and Competition Manager, Lenka Greenhalgh said the events have been well received by the tennis community in the ACT.

“It has been great to see some players who haven’t competed for a while get back on court.  The events have attracted a number of players back who haven’t competed since they were in juniors.

“The players are really enjoying the level based play and we are getting quality matches each time they are on court.”

The last event held from 12-13 September saw 95 player compete across seven draws.
