Australia’s Harry Bourchier (Tas) and China’s Zhe Li have both caused big upsets on Day 3 of the Apis Canberra International (Bendigo).  Bourchier took out ninth seed and world No.107 Marcos Giron, while lucky loser Li overcame second seed Andreas Seppi (ITA).

Bourchier came into the event, sitting at a career high ranking of No.286 and earned his third victory today after coming through qualifying, winning 6-3 6-7(3) 6-3.  The Tasmanian was solid on serve, sending down 12 aces and winning 75% of points on his first serve.  Bourchier will now take on seventh seed Soonwoo Kwon (KOR) who accounted for Yannick Maden (GER) in just 48 minutes today.

Li lost to Bourchier in qualifying but got a call up in to the main draw after the withdrawal of Hyeon Chung (KOR).  It appeared Seppi was in control of the match after taking the first set 6-3, but Li fought back to take the second 7-5 and take the momentum into the third set with the world No.209 winning it 6-4. Li will now take on Evgeny Donskoy (RUS) who beat Australia’s Andrew Harris (Vic) today.

The remaining seeds in action on Wednesday including top seed Ugo Humbert (FRA), Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) and Jaume Munar (ESP) all progressed to the third round.

In the women’s event, top seed Patricia Maria Tig (ROU) was a straight sets winner over Indy De Vroom (NED), while second seed Mandy Minella (LUX) recovered from a set down to defeat Pemra Ozgen (TUR).  Third seed Sachia Vickery (USA) was also a winner in three sets, while former top 100 player Irina Falconi (USA) took out fifth seed, Kalinina Anhelina (UKR).  Jaimee Fourlis (Vic) was the only Australian to progress through to the second round, coming from behind to beat Reka-Luca Jani (HUN).

All round of 16 matches will be played in both the men’s and women’s draws on Thursday, with play commencing at the Fosterville Gold Tennis Centre at 10am.
