The hub of wheelchair tennis in the ACT, North Woden Tennis Club (NWTC), have officially opened their wheelchair ramp and wheelchair accessible bathroom on Thursday 13 June.

The project was made possible after the club secured a$10,000 ANZ Community Tennis Grant, along with support from the ACT Government and the Tennis Australia National Court Rebate Scheme.

The project consisted of constructing disabled access ramps onto the deck and into the Club rooms and upgrades to both bathrooms (now all unisex) with the former male toilet converted to a disabled toilet and shower facility.

The club along with commercial partner Rising Star Tennis Academy also contributed to the project which was constructed by long time supporters of NWTC, Monarch Constructions.

North Woden Tennis Club President, Terry Lennard, is pleased to have the upgrades completed.

“These facilities are a great step forward for wheelchair tennis players in the ACT, and enables the NWTC to meet our obligations to the players as the Tennis Australia (TA) designated ACT Hub for Wheelchair Tennis.

“Delivery of all NWTC programs for all players have been enhanced by the work that our funding and construction partners helped to support.

“We cannot thank the ANZ bank, Tennis ACT and the ACT Government enough for their assistance to our Club and to Tennis overall,” Lennard added.

Commenting on the initiative, ANZ Woden Branch Manager Jitin Oberoi said “We’re excited to present North Woden Tennis Club with this ANZ Tennis Hot Shots community grant. The club is a wonderful part of our community and are a great supporter of grass roots tennis.”

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry, said she was pleased to provide support for this project, recognising the high priority for the club and Tennis ACT in further establishing this hub for wheelchair tennis in the ACT.

”The ACT Government is committed to assisting sporting clubs and associations to grow participation and to get Canberrans active.

“Tennis provides opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to participate and it is great to see North Woden Tennis Club and the coaches fully embrace this wheelchair program”.

The NWTC Wheelchair program takes place from 10.00am-11.30am on Saturdays with new participants welcome.  To find out more about, please click here.
