The Tennis World Canberra Bronze JT, Girls only event was held in conjunction with finals weekend of the ACT Claycourt International #1 from 22-24 March.

The opportunity to watch some of the world’s best players while competing in their own event provided plenty of motivation for the junior athletes.

Canberra’s Alisha Kumar had a great weekend, winning both the 12/u singles and enjoyed watching the professionals.

“It was pretty cool, because while I was playing, in between breaks I could see the players play.”

Kumar provided a spirited comeback in the final after being down a set and 5-1, she recovered to win the match 6-7(5) 7-5(2) 11-9.  She also combined with Jessica Das to defeat Chloe Barton and Lily Carmody in the doubles.

Despite the victories, Kumar was looking forward to improving her game to hopefully one day play in similar events to the ACT Claycourt International.

“I think I played very well on the weekend even though I have a few things to improve on in the future.”

In other results over the weekend, Sophie McDonald and Ellie Koundouris both made the singles semifinals.  McDonald also combined with Jane Haeusler to take on the 16/u girls doubles title.

A boys only JT was also held a few weeks earlier with Nicholas Maleganeas the standout performer from the ACT.  Maleganeas only dropped 3 games on his way to the singles title and also combined with Leo Phijidvijan to make the doubles final.
