Tennis in the ACT and region is now more accessible than ever before, surpassing 100 courts that have opened up their gates with an innovative online booking system.

Campbell and Kambah Tennis Clubs are the latest to install the new technology to help encourage local residents to get involved in tennis and helping Canberra to reach this impressive milestone.

Club members, locals, tennis fans and occasional players can book courts at their leisure with the new online booking system.

The improved booking process allows players to book and pay online, with players then given a PIN that provides access to the courts and turns on the lights at their designated time.

The ACT has led the way nationally with 16 clubs utilising the new program which offers both flexibility and freedom for players who can now easily access the courts.

Tennis ACT CEO Kim Kachel says the innovative system is playing a crucial role in getting people back on court and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

“We are really proud to be leading the way nationally in implementing the online booking system and we are already seeing a growth in court hire usage.

“Last financial year 29,837 bookings were made through the new online booking system, and with the addition of further clubs, we are set to surpass that figure this financial year with over 23,000 bookings already completed.  It means a more active and healthy community and it’s great to see tennis as the vehicle for this.

“The system is increasing access to tennis facilities across the ACT and surrounding regions, encouraging people to pick up a racquet and have a hit.

The ACT Government has been an integral partner in the success of the online booking system, providing support for the installation at Ainslie, Belconnen, Melba, The Pines, Turner, and Weston Creek Tennis Clubs.

The initiative was recognised at the CBR Sport Awards in December winning the Minister for Sport and Recreation’s Award for Innovation.

Minster for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry, MLA is pleased to see the system opening up access to sporting facilities in the capital.

“Tennis ACT’s innovative court booking system is a great initiative and has already seen an increase in court usage across Canberra.

“The ACT Government is committed to ensuring there are plenty of opportunities for Canberrans to participate in active recreation to enrich their everyday lives.

“Systems like these provide better access for participation in sport and help support such an active place like Canberra,” added Minster Berry.

In further good news, it was recently announced that Tennis ACT would receive $12,000 as part of the 2019 Sport and Recreation Grants Program to implement the online booking system at additional clubs across the capital.
