Tennis ACT have launched the 2019 East Hotel Canberra Challenger at East Hotel today. Part of the Australian Pro Tour, the East Hotel Canberra Challenger, an ATP Challenger 80 event will be held in Canberra from 6 – 12 January 2019.

It is anticipated players from the world’s top 100 will feature in the men’s tournament, now a renowned lead in to the Australian Open as they compete for significant prize money and valuable world ranking points.  A host of Australia’s rising stars will also compete as they look to make their mark on the Pro Tour.

Tennis ACT CEO, Kim Kachel is excited about the event “The East Hotel Canberra Challenger returns for a fourth year to the world class Canberra Tennis Centre.   Last year 64 players participated in the tournament from 21 countries. We are excited to once more welcome Australian champions and international stars of the sport”.

Kachel continues “The 2019 East Hotel Canberra Challenger is again an important event on the Canberra calendar. Friday 11 January the free Twilight Session will return, where fans will be able to experience food trucks, beverage outlets and entertainment while catching all of the action of the double’s semifinals. Fans will also get the chance to pick up a racquet and have a social hit on court with friends”.

In January 2018 the tournament featured 11 players in the world’s top 100 with 7491 people through the gates.  Italian Andreas Seppi survived match point in the opening round to come back and win the tournament, defeating four top 100 players on his way to the title.  In a world class final, Seppi defeated world No.85 Marton Fucsovics, 5-7 6-4 6-3.  Both players then went on to progress to the fourth round of Australian Open 2018 the following week.

Tennis ACT again welcome back East Hotel as the naming rights partner of the tournament. East Hotel General Manager Todd Handy said it was great to be involved in the summer of tennis “East Hotel is delighted to again be involved with Tennis ACT who are so cheerfully dedicated to keeping the young people in our community active and engaged in this sport which can be fun for the whole family”.

Handy continues “East Hotel is a local, family-owned business, so we truly value the relationships that are built and the spirit that Tennis ACT exudes through their many programs.  We are honoured to be the naming rights partner in this final segment of the Australian Pro Tour leading up to the Australian Open.  We hope to see new members of the community come out to enjoy the summer of tennis at the Canberra Tennis Centre with us.”
