Tennis participation levels in the ACT have hit record levels with the 2017-18 financial year seeing 27,570 people participating in tennis programs across the capital.

The biggest growth came in the schools area, with over 15,000 school children participating in Tennis for Primary and Secondary School national programs.  Fifty-five primary schools and 13 high schools delivered tennis with the program aligned to the Australian Curriculum.

The success of the school programs has filtered through to the club level with 4794 children participating in ANZ Tennis Hot Shots programs.

With the support of ACT Government and Tennis Australia, the ACT continues to lead the country with Book A Court, an electronic gate and online booking system, making it easier than ever for patrons to hire a court.  Over 50% of clubs in the ACT are utilising the system which has seen 29,826 court bookings in the past 12 months.

Tennis ACT CEO, Kim Kachel, said the results were a great reflection of the tennis community in the ACT.

“We have a great tennis community in Canberra, with dedicated volunteers at our clubs and passionate professional coaches.

“The ACT has been leading the way with initiatives such as Book a Court, and our clubs and coaches are always the first to put their hands up to get involved in new programs.”

It caps off a massive twelve months for Tennis ACT which also saw Fed Cup return to Canberra for the first time in 20 years when Australia defeated Ukraine 3-2 in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II first round in February.

Tennis ACT also hosted five Pro Tour events with the Apis Canberra International, East Hotel Canberra Challenger and the ACT Claycourt International.

“We have actively utilised our major events to leverage participation with the integration of Kids Tennis Day, the Twilight tennis session, and the Girls Make Your Move Day proving highly successful community events,” Kachel added.
