26 June 2018 | Tennis ACT

Seventy-eight participants braved the frosty mornings as part of the ANZ Junior Development Series (JDS), playing in the Tennis World Canberra Junior Open at the Canberra Tennis Centre on 23-24 June.

With opponents barely visible through the early morning Canberra fog, the 11/u and 13/u boys commenced their singles Round Robin events. All players had an immensely enjoyable time playing on various court surfaces many had yet to experience.

A number of outstanding rounds of tennis were enjoyed by tournament staff, spectators and most certainly, the participating players. Group two of the 13/u boys through up some tough battles, with Kiran Myutel-Mansur coming out on top after edging Elian Lopez and Ryan Duan.  Myutel-Mansur then went on to make the final before falling to Nicholas Maleganeaus 6-2.

In the afternoon, the girls hit to courts showcasing some top tennis . With matches finishing late afternoon, players were very efficient in finalising matches and competing professionally throughout the weekend.

Tournament director Jarrod Williams was pleased with the success of the event.

“With the nature of the ANZ JDS, it is fantastic to see upcoming tennis talent in the ACT.  For many players, this is an introduction to tournaments play.  All players were extremely well behaved and parents were seen supporting development and strong participation of players.

“It is so important for coaches and parents to exposing their players to match experience, and the ANZ JDS provides a great environment for this.  Match practice is vital for building on court conditioning only found throughout match conditions.
