The past month has seen ACT players put in some solid preparation on the practice courts for the December Showdown 2017 held at Melbourne Park throughout December. The showdown consists of singles and doubles National titles in the 12/u, 14/u, 16/u and 18/u age groups and the 12/u and 14/u National teams events. There is plenty on the line in what is the biggest junior events of the year for the athletes, with the winner of the 18/u girls singles receiving a main draw singles wildcard into the Australian Open 2018 Womens Singles..

Annerly Poulos led the way, winning the 16/u Australian Championships after coming through qualifying.  She defeated the second, third, fifth, and eight seeds on her way to the title.  As a result she has received a wildcard into the Australian Open 2018 Girls Singles event.  Annerly also reached the final of the 14/u Australian Championships singles and doubles, going down in two very close matches in both finals.  For more on Annerly’s victory click here

Tallulah Farrow had an outstanding tournament, upsetting the fourth seed on her way to the quarterfinals of the 16/u Australian Championships.  She also made it through to the semifinals of the doubles event. Kaitlin Staines reached the final of the 18/u girls doubles with her partner from Queensland Olivia Galecki. A special mention to Ashleigh Simes who lost to eventual winner Anastasia Berezov in the first round of the 14/u girls singles, but then went on to win 5 straight matches and win the West Consolation draw.

The ACT had four teams represented in the boys and girls 12/u and 14/u teams events. The teams and their finishing position were

12/u girls – Sophie Macdonald, Aliyah Dwyer, Isabella Andrews and manager Arina Yatovtseva (10th)

12/u boys – Charlie Camus, Stellan Lindrud, Hugh Taylor and manager Alun Jones (11th)

14/u girls – Ashleigh Simes, Alyssa Simoncini, Camila Felix-Vonarx and manager Nathan Price (8th)

14/u boys – Charlie Snow, Nick Bisa, Lachlan Rowing (NSW) and manager Brett Lennard (11th)
