16 August 2017 | Tennis ACT

Over 160 students from across seven schools have battled it out in the first ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Regional Gala Days held across two venues on Monday 14 August with Aranda Primary School and Canberra Grammar School claiming the honours.

At the South Weston event held at St Edmunds College, Canberra Grammar School came out on top, with St Edmunds College finishing in second.

The Belconnen event was held at Melba Tennis Club with Aranda Primary School narrowly edging out Giralang Primary School.

Canberra Grammar, St Edmunds, Aranda Primary, and Giralang Primary will now all progress to the ACT State Final on September 13.  An additional two qualifying events will be held on September 1, with the top two teams also progressing to the ACT State Final.  The winning team from the ACT State Final will then compete against the best schools from across NSW in the Todd Woodbridge Cup Final.

Aranda Primary School teacher Tricia Butters was pleased with the outcome of the day. We’re very excited, it was a very competitive day so it was nice for the kids to get the results and obviously then going to the next level, playing against other schools from around the ACT is very exciting.

Aranda’s active tennis program played a part in their success on the day.  “We are a partnership school, so for the last 2 years we’ve had clinics with the 5/6 and the 3/4’s, and we also have a weekly tennis club that we run at lunch time” Butters said.

On the prospect of making it through to the Todd Woodbridge Cup Final, Butters said “They [the students] were excited about it when it was mentioned first thing today, so we are looking forward to that, hopefully fingers crossed we might get the opportunity”.

Aranda Primary student Lauren McSweeney had a great day saying “I like that everyone got a go at doing it [playing tennis], and everyone had good sportsmanship”.

The competition open to Year 3 and 4 students, was played on smaller modified courts suitable for red modified balls.  The competition is designed to encourage grass-roots tennis participation in schools and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle among children.
