On 22 May, 32 passionate local teachers learnt how to deliver and implement tennis in schools at the Tennis for Primary Schools’ workshop at the Canberra Tennis Centre.

Delivered by Tennis Australia’s Coach Development Coordinator, Sam Bradshaw, teachers went through a program based on the National Schools Resource – a supportive document developed by Tennis Australia, to support teachers in the delivery of tennis at school.

Bradshaw also guided participants on how to play the sport within a limited playing area, using modified equipment.

Tennis ACT Schools Development Coordinator, Geoff Bartlett, was pleased with the turnout, considering the cold Canberra night.

“The atmosphere was electric, as so many teachers got involved in the workshop,” he said.

“The aim of the program is to promote fun, inclusivity and success to students of all abilities.”

“Ultimately, we want children of all ages playing tennis as it is a sport that they can play for life. This is an opportunity for kids to develop their skills, learn the sport and keep active.”

The teachers were given the time to practice a range of activities specifically designed from foundation (kindergarten) to years 7 and 8 based on the ANZ Tennis Hotshots program.

Tennis ACT regularly runs professional development opportunities for partner schools, allowing for teacher and coach to be on the same page when delivering tennis programs.
