World No.873 Harry Bourchier (TAS) caused major upset on Day 2 to overcome world No.220 and tournament top seed Jordi Samper-Montana (ESP) in an epic comeback at the ACT Claycourt International 2017.
Down 5-0 in the first set, Bourchier was forced to dig deep against the Spaniard, closing out the match 6-7[3], 5-7 in one hour and 49 minutes.
“I was down 5-0 in the first set, so to get back in the first set and be in contention to even win that set was a top effort,” he said.
“He [Sampner-Montana] started off a lot better than me, but I worked hard and caught up with him in the end”.
“I played really well and worked hard. Clay isn’t really my surface so to beat a Spanish guy on clay is pretty insane, and I’m pretty happy about it”.
Based in Canberra since the middle of last year, the 21-year-old Tasmanian now trains in Canberra. For the past few months, he has worked towards perfecting his game on clay.
“I’ve had a bit of a match losing streak so it was good to break that at the same time”.
The win gains Bourchier a place in round 2 of the event, set to take on Steven DeWaard (QLD) on Thursday 16 March at 10am.
“The win gives me a lot of confidence going forward, so hopefully I can bring that into the next match”.
In other matches local James Frawley (ACT) was defeated by fellow Aussie Bradley Mousley (AUS). Top seeds [2] Marc Polmans (VIC), [4] Blake Mott (VIC), Evan King (USA) and Dayne Kelly (AUS) all progressed to the second round.
