1 May 2012 | Tennis Victoria

An impressive showing of over 200 people recently attended the Frankston Tennis Club’s 120th birthday, including current and former members, friends and family.

The club is the oldest on the Mornington Peninsula, and is one of the oldest clubs in Victoria.

Over three generations of tennis families attended the celebration, some travelling from as far as Queensland to join in the festivities.

Special guests on the day included Frankston City Concillors Cr Christine Richards, Cr Glen Aitken, Mr Bruce Billson, MP (member for Dunkley), Tennis Victoria President David Stobart, Vice-President Maria Keys, Tennis Victoria Board Member Peter Cuxson and various members of other local clubs, who have all become a part of the extended Frankston Tennis Club community.

The day was also used by City Councillor Cr Richards to announce the club would be staying at the current location adjacent to Peninsula Health much to the delight of the club.

It is hoped the club will continue to provide a vital role within the community in delivering a healthy, active and welcoming social environment for all ages.

The club, located on Yuille Street in Frankston, began way back in May 1891 with a single lawn court.

Today, the club has 15 red porous courts, a two-storey clubhouse and is currently ranked the 12th best tennis club in the state by Tennis Victoria and recently became one of Tennis Australia’s regional partners.

At the celebration, the club showed off over 50 years of Premiership Flags, along with a large collection of photographic memorabilia, historical newspapers, club newsletters and trophies.

One of the clubs living legends, 96-year-old Sir Ron Carter attended the day, and spoke of how proud he was to be part of the club and its century old history.

Current President of the club Dawn McCormack was delighted with the events attendance and reflected on the club’s remarkable longevity as well as its many achievements.

Although celebrations for the 120th birthday have only just finished, the club is already looking towards 2016, where it will celebrate its 125th anniversary.
