Young family takes out 2020 Jim Witherford Challenge

Hamish Geale  Examiner 2/10/2020

BIG DAY: Campbell and Belinda Young defeated Cathy Harvey and Ryan Walker 6-4 in the final of the Jim Witheford Memorial Challenge.

Family chemistry proved unbeatable on Sunday when Belinda and Fletcher Young won the second Jim Witherford Memorial Challenge.

Held at Riverside Tennis Club, the event saw 15 mixed doubled pairings split into three pools.

The Riverside Primary School pairing of Cathy Harvey and Ryan Walker emerged with a 4-0 record to book a semi-final spot, as did Deb Crick and Campbell Young.

VICTORS: Mother-and-son combo Belinda and Fletcher Young.

Young’s younger brother and mother dropped their first match of they day but still topped the third pool, with Dasha Nepustilova and Dennis Harding qualifying for finals as the top-ranked second-place finisher.

A scintillating first semi-final saw Harvey and Walker edge Harding and Nepustilova 6-5, while two Youngs proved better than one in the second semi.

The Youngs then took out the final 6-4 to cap off an event which tournament supervisor Gabriella Holden said had been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from players.

The first Jim Witherford Memorial Challenge was held last year, honouring Riverside’s president of 27 years who died in 2018.

INAUGURAL JIM WITHEFORD MEMORIAL CHALLENGE 2019

Played on Sunday 22nd September 2019, we had sixteen mixed doubles pairs from clubs around the North competing in a round robin format to honour our former president of 27 years. Our four pool winners all made it to the semi finals undefeated, with Christine Egan and Greg Porter defeating Max Byrne and his daughter Cathy Harvey 6/4. Roxie Holden and Owen Geale defeated Karen Maclaren and Rod Meldrum 6/2 in the other semi. Roxie and Owen went on to win the final against Chris and Greg 6/4, becoming the first name on our generously, anonymously donated Shield, which will hang in the clubhouse permanently as a reminder of Jim’s contribution to the club. The winners also took home some gift vouchers from our fantastic supporters at WISEGUISE PIZZA.

We hope to expand the competition in 2020 to our maximum size of 20 pairs now that everybody has had a taste of what was a great, cheap day of competitive tennis. Thanks to our helper on the bbq, Mr.Ryan Walker, and thanks to the pairs from Legana, Deloraine, AIC, Trevallyn and Longford who made the effort to come along.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020

Club championships are moving from their usual October/November timeslot to a less busy time of the year hopefully; March. Accordingly, we wont be having a championship in 2020 so soon after the 2019 version, so our next championship will take place in March 2021. The format will also be changing; all singles matches in both A and B grade played on one weekend, followed two weeks later by all doubles and mixed championships matches played on one day. One day for each – winner decided by the end of the day; nobody qualifying for a grand final but then being unavailable on grand final day like in recent years.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019

Club championships finals 2019 were played on Friday evening 29th and Saturday 30th December.

This year club members enjoyed a barbeque again cooked by Owen and appreciated a sunny morning and the completion f tennis before the evening rain came. Below are the results, with our winners and runners-up receiving fantastic prizes which were donated by some fantastic businesses who support us each year. We are extremely grateful for their continuing support, and encourage everybody to in turn support these businesses to say thank you.
