Belconnen ACT 2617, Australia, 23 November 2016 | Kim Huynh

Belconnen Tennis Club is working with Belconnen Community Services to provide lessons for a class of adults living with disabilities.

The tennis sessions are part of the Bridges Community Access and Skills Development Program, which incorporates art, cooking, dance, exercise and sport.

Led by David Beniamini with assistance from a handful of club members, the lessons emphasise the three fundamentals of tennis, which so many experienced players often forget at their peril.

a) Watch the ball

b) Move your feet

c) Have a great time

For the class, tennis served as means to connect with different people and try out new experiences. The same could be said for the Belconnen Tennis Club volunteers.

The lesson for all was that sport is not just about improving fitness and skills, but also overcoming the nets and getting past the fences that we all encounter in developing healthy human relationships and self-awareness. To this end, the club is looking to extend and enrich its outreach activities for the benefit of the community and its members.
