The Canberra Velocity women surged to the top of the North Conference ladder with a 5-1 victory over the Sunshine Coast Breakers. However, it was mixed fortunes for the Canberra team, with the men losing 2-4, despite world number 30, Nick Kyrgios lining up for doubles.

The Velocity women’s team was strengthened by the return of world number 317 Alison Bai. Bai got the team off to a great start, defeating Kayla Mcphee in two tiebreak sets. Tyra Calderwood and Ashley Keir won in contrasting styles with Calderwood defeating Shan-Ying Barr 4-2, 4-2, but Keir having to fight back from a set down to defeat Ella Husrefovic 2-4, 4-2, 4-0. With the Velocity leading 3-0, Kaitlin Staines couldn’t close the match out, losing to Somer Dalla-Bona 4-3, 3-4, 4-0. The Velocity doubles pairings of Bai/Keir and Calderwood/Staines put the match beyond doubt, both winning in straight sets over Mcphee/Dalla-Bona and Husrefovic/Barr respectively.

In the men’s match, the Velocity fell behind quickly losing the first 3 singles rubbers, before James Frawley continued his great form with a comfortable win over Luke Harvey, 4-2, 4-1. Kyrgios partnered with Daniel Guccione and after a slow start ran away with the match 1-4, 4-1, 5-0. However, it was the Breakers day taking out the other doubles match 5-4 in the tiebreak.

The Canberra Velocity now play Western Sydney Warriors in Wollongong tomorrow.
