Gala Dinner

Australian tennis legends, Wally Masur, John Fitzgerald, and Todd Woodbridge were in Canberra to speak at the Inaugural Tennis ACT Gala Dinner and participate in the 2015 Maxim Invitational charity event.

Over 230 people attended the gala dinner held at QT Hotel on February 12.  Masur, Fitzgerald, and Woodbridge exchanged stories on their playing days, along with recapping this year’s Australian Open and providing their insights into the form of current Australian players. Canberra’s own Nick Kyrgios, along with his parents Nill and George, also attended the dinner.  Nick donated a signed racquet which was auctioned off on the night, along with a signed shirt and shorts from junior Wimbledon, and a signed hat that were used as raffle prizes.

The dinner was a fundraiser for Tennis ACT in order to complete additional upgrades to the Canberra Tennis Centre to increase the numbers of international events held at the venue.

Earlier in the day, the three legends participated in the Maxim Invitational,  a fundraising event established in 2011 by Maxim Chartered Accountants and since its inception has raised over half a million dollars for worthwhile charities in the Canberra community. The event saw 120 players from 32 teams play in a tennis charity day at North Woden Tennis Centre. Masur, Fitzgerald, and Woodbridge played with various teams throughout the day.

The day raised $150,000 for the two feature charities, Kulture Break and Technical Aid to the Disabled (TADACT). Kulture Break is a Canberra based charity youth services provider with a community arts focus. TADACT is a not for profit organisation that specialises in creating or modifying equipment for people with a disability of all ages and supporting their carers. The funds raised on the day will go towards purchasing a van for Kulture Break to assist with selected dance programs, and to a much needed expansion fit out and showroom for TADACT.
