There has been mixed results for Canberra Velocity in the Asia Pacific Tennis League with the Women defeating the South East Smashers 5-1, while the Men have gone down to Macquarie University Warriors 4-2.

The women got off to a quick start with Alison Bai having too much experience for 15 year old Renee McBryde 4-2, 4-0. The Smashers hit back almost straight away with Shion Watabe proving too strong for Imogen Clews winning 4-2, 4-0. With the teams locked at 1-1, Tyra Calderwood and Maria Vais hit the courts for their singles matches. Vais was in impressive form defeating Francesca Agazzi without the loss of a game. Calderwood then put Velocity up 3-1 with a convincing 4-1, 4-2 win over Rhiannon Marlin. The women only needed to take one of the doubles matches to clinch the win and it was the team of Bai and Vais who got there first with a 4-2, 4-0 win over Watabe and Agazzi. Calderwood and Clews then rounded out the tie with a hard fought win over McBryde and Marlin 4-2, 3-4, 10-5.

In the Men’s match, Jake Eames didn’t recover from a quad strain sustained earlier in the week in time to suit up for Velocity. With Eames out, Dimitri Morogiannis moved up to the number one position to face world number 473 Dayne Kelly. Kelly’s power and experience proved too much for Morogiannis defeating the youngster without dropping a game. Robert Howe and Jurek Stasiak played the match of the night, with Stasiak taking the first set with a sudden death point. Howe hit back in the second 4-2, but Stasiak fought back to take the third 4-0 and put the Warriors up 2-0. James Frawley then hit back for the Velocity with a commanding 4-0, 4-1 win over David Barclay. The Warriors then took the final singles with Ryan Frawley going down to Jason Taylor 4-0, 4-1. Heading into the doubles 3-1 down, Velocity needed to secure both doubles matches in straight sets in order to win. Alun Jones and James Frawley kept the hopes alive by defeating Barclay and Kelly 4-1, 4-1. The Warriors however proved too strong in the other doubles with Adam and Jason Taylor defeating Howe and Jake Okines 4-1, 4-2.

Canberra Velocity will return to action on Thursday the 27th of November at Sydney Olympic Park.
