Launceston TAS 7250, Australia, 27 June 2018 | Tennis Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government has committed to delivering $2 million to help upgrade the Launceston Tennis Community and Events Centre.

“This project has the capacity to  deliver key benefits for Tasmania and the Launceston region – economically, socially, physically and mentally,” MP Guy Barnett said.

“It includes new multi-purpose community spaces and provides the current world-class playing facility with greater capacity to successfully attract and operate elite tennis events.”

The Liberal Member for Lyons was in Launceston on Saturday to make the announcement, where he was joined by Tennis Tasmania chief executive officer Darren Sturgess.

“It’s a much-needed centre and a much-needed commitment,” Mr Sturgess said.

Tennis Tasmania has also committed $300,000 to the project. Further support is needed from federal and local government to fund the $4 million project.

The Launceston Tennis Community and Events Centre hosts the annual Launceston International in February, one of three international tennis tournaments staged in the state.
