Coach Pip Martin
Coach: Pip Martin
Club: Devonport Tennis Club
Pip Martin’s coaching journey is a story of passion rediscovered. A former junior and U.S. college tennis player, Pip first began coaching during her own playing days. But it wasn’t until years later – when her children joined a Red Ball class that she found herself back on court in a new role.
“The head coach didn’t have anyone available at the last minute and asked me to step in,” Pip recalls. “That one session turned into a weekly commitment – and I haven’t looked back since.”
Now a dedicated coach at Devonport Tennis Club for nearly four years, Pip brings a unique blend of experience, energy, and empathy to her sessions. Her coaching style is shaped not only by her tennis background but also by a diverse career in sport and fitness. She’s a fully qualified coach in cycling, triathlon, athletics, personal training, and Pilates—giving her a holistic understanding of movement, motivation, and performance.
Before returning to tennis coaching, Pip spent years helping people achieve their fitness goals across different disciplines. This broad foundation has enriched her approach to tennis, where she focuses on developing well-rounded athletes and confident individuals.
What Pip loves most about coaching is simple but powerful “Seeing players fall in love with the game of tennis gives me great joy.”
She believes tennis is a sport for everyone – regardless of age, background, or language. “It’s a global game. You don’t need to speak the same language as someone to go on court and have a fun match.”
Pip’s own tennis journey began early – on a court in her front yard and against the hitting wall at Devonport. She played her first tournament at age 12 and was instantly hooked. Her talent and dedication led her to represent Tasmania at the state level and earn a full scholarship playing Division 1 college tennis in the United States.
Today, she offers programs for players aged 3 and up, catering to all skill levels in the Devonport area. Whether she’s introducing toddlers to the basics or helping teens refine their technique, Pip’s sessions are inclusive, engaging, and full of encouragement.
Outside of coaching, Pip is an avid runner, cyclist, and swimmer. A regular Parkrun participant, she thrives on movement and the challenge of discovering what her body is capable of. “I love to move my body and discover what it is capable of,” she says.
When asked how coaching has shaped her personally, Pip reflects: “I think personal development has helped my coaching. I’m constantly learning and improving myself – always asking, what can I do better?”
With her deep love for the game, commitment to growth, and infectious enthusiasm, Pip Martin is more than a coach – she’s a mentor, motivator, and role model for players of all ages.
