Michael Shepheard has recorded a great first round win at the Optus 12s National Claycourt Championships in Ipswich, Queensland.

Shepheard took the first set comfortably 6-1 before his opponent Enzo Aguiard of Victoria fought back to take the second set 5-7. Stretched to the limit and out of his comfort zone on the red dirt, Shepheard the tournament fifth seed recovered marvellously in the third set to close out the match 6-0.

Shepheard backed up his singles win with an impressive performance in the doubles. Teaming up with South Australian Sean Van Rensburg to defeat Victorian pairing of Justin Butera and Joshua Spaull 6-4 6-2.
