Victorian Country Inter-regional Championships

The BARWON Region has once again stamped its authority on the State after claiming its fourth straight Victorian Inter-Regional crown.  The R e g i o n was awarded the championship after the finals were called off due to rain however, the result was hardly in doubt.  Whether it was singles, doubles or mixed doubles the Barwon players were able to performat their best and were scheduled to play in the majority of the cancelled finals.  Their dominance was best highlighted by Ari Levinson and James Brushfield who would have had to face each other in the under-18 boys’ final.  Captain Mick Mullen said the doubles teams were the catalyst.   ‘‘Our doubles teams played really well which was good because we didn’t do as well in the singles as we did last year,’’ he said.  The region has now won 10 of the past 12 Championships.

Association – Region Teams Challenge

Over the Queen’s Birthday week-end, Barwon Tennis Region was represented at the “Association – Regional Teams Challenge” at the Traralgon Tennis Centre. This is an annual event run by Tennis Victoria, and brings together talented players from both regional and country areas across the State. The “14 and Unders” were represented by Geordie Daulaca (Torquay), Jesse Brunt (Grovedale), Nicole Mullens (Waurn Ponds) and Nicola McLennan (Aireys Inlet). In the “12 and Unders” team were Jayson Tomicic (Waurn Ponds), Axel Hider (Grovedale), Taylah Mielczarek (Wandana Heights) and Olivia Ryan (All Saints).   All players did very well, with Barwon recording 4 wins and a narrow loss against the opposing regions. Each person played ten 8 game sets over the 3 days, and the final result of 5th place out of 16 teams was well deserved. All players were a credit to the region.
