The dream of a world-class tennis facility in northern Tasmania has become reality, with the completion of Launceston’s new $3.1 million tennis centre set to transform the sporting landscape for generations to come.

Tennis Tasmania General Manager, Darren Sturgess said the state-of-the-art facility represents a pivotal moment for the sport in the region.

“This centre will be a vibrant year-round hub for tennis and community activities, welcoming people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. We’re already seeing its impact, having secured major tournaments including a Junior International event and the return of the prestigious Launceston International,” Mr Sturgess said.

The Launceston Tennis, Community and Events Centre stands as a testament to collaborative vision, with funding partners including the Tasmanian Government contributing $2 million, alongside support from the Federal Government, City of Launceston, and Tennis Australia.

Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan said it was fantastic to watch these upgrades transform into the northern regional hub for tennis in Tasmania.

“The facility’s opening marks a major milestone for tennis enthusiasts and athletes of all ages, and excitingly, is now ready to host the Launceston International when it returns next month,” Minister Duigan said.

“Whether you’re looking to hone your skills, see world-class tennis on our doorstep, or simply have fun with family and friends, the Launceston Tennis Centre offers something for everyone,” Minister Duigan said.

“I hope this centre will bring the community together. It’s more than a place to play tennis – it’s a hub for fostering sportsmanship, keeping our state fit, and fun.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, our Government is committed to supporting sport in our community. We want to see more people participating and connecting through sports and active recreation, which is exactly what this facility will do.”

The excitement is palpable at the local government level too, with City of Launceston Mayor, Matthew Garwood expressing his enthusiasm for what lies ahead.

“We are absolutely stoked at the City of Launceston to see the upgraded Northern Regional Tennis Centre ready to host the returning Launceston International Tournament in 2025,” Mayor Garwood said.

“I want to thank all our project partners for sharing the vision and working collaboratively to make this project a reality, and I can’t wait to see the redeveloped facility in action.”

An official opening celebration will be held next month, just before the Launceston International tournament begins, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate.
