With the Launceston Tennis, Community and Events Centre development on track to be completed by the end of 2024, Tennis Tasmania is proud to announce its 2025 Competitive Play calendar will feature five consecutive weeks of world class tennis across the North and North West of the state, featuring two weeks of junior international tennis in both Burnie and Launceston.

The Launceston International’s return was announced earlier this year and will follow the $20K Tasmanian Championships in Devonport and the HCI Burnie International. With the addition of two new junior tournaments, Tasmania will now play host to four international level events following the Hobart International and the Australian Open in Melbourne over January:

Monday 27 January 2025 Burnie Junior International ITF
Monday 3 February 2025 Launceston Junior International ITF
Monday 10 February 2025 Tasmanian Championships $20k, Devonport
Monday 17 February 2025 HCI Burnie International Pro Tournament
Monday 24 February 2025 Launceston International Pro Tournament

“We’re in for a great summer of tennis here in Tasmania with the 30th WTA 250 Hobart International in early January, followed by five weeks of world class tennis across the North and North West of Tasmania from 27 January onwards,” Tennis Tasmania General Manager, Darren Sturgess said.

“The first two weeks will see junior international tournaments played in both Burnie and Launceston, followed by the $20K Tasmanian Championships in Devonport, and then two weeks of men’s and women’s international tournaments in Burnie and Launceston.

“Securing two Junior International tournaments in North and North West Tasmania is great recognition for us and provides a great opportunity for our aspiring junior tennis players. We are renowned for the quality of major tennis tournament delivery and the support received from State and Local Governments in Tasmania.”

MI Global Partners estimate this new start to the 2025 tennis calendar will inject more than $2.8m into northern Tasmania’s economy, helping to secure more jobs for the region and create more playing opportunities for Tasmanians.

“The benefits to the north of the state are huge – both economically and socially. All the hospitality and tourism industries are going to benefit from this major announcement; it really is going to be a festival of tennis right across the North and North West of Tasmania in the new year,” Tasmanian Government Member for Bass, Simon Wood said.

“All of this is underpinned by the Tasmanian Government’s $2m investment into the Launceston Tennis Centre for the new club room and function rooms, and a further $85,000 invested into the resurfacing of the Burnie tennis courts so Tasmania can present world-class facilities to an international audience and keep the calibre of competition up. But most importantly, inspire the young and emerging tennis players to come and see the big names in their chosen sport and really participate and get involved.”

Burnie will kick off the five weeks of world-class tennis, hosting the Burnie Junior International ITF and then host the HCI Burnie International Pro Tournament in mid-February.

“The Burnie Tennis Club would like to acknowledge and thank the state government for announcing funding towards the court resurfacing as it will enable the Burnie International to go ahead in 2025, as well as enable the introduction of the new ITF junior tournament,” Burnie Tennis Club Captain, Shaun Summers said.

“As a pioneer of international tennis in the northern region, Burnie is delighted to see it’s now evolving into five significant tennis events in the north of the state.”

With the Launceston Tennis, Community and Events Centre development on track to be completed by the end of 2024, the Launceston community is ready for the return of the Launceston International in 2025.

“It was a significant blow to the Launceston community when the Launceston International was moved, so to see the investment from the state government, Tennis Tasmania and Tennis Australia, as well as the City of Launceston, is a great example of how we can all work together to create great outcomes for our community,” City of Launceston Mayor, Matthew Garwood said.

Following the two new junior international tournaments, Devonport will host the $20K Tasmanian Championships in the middle of the five weeks of world-class tennis in the North and North West.

“Devonport is excited to play a key role in supporting international tennis here in Tasmania. This event will enhance our City’s reputation as a premier destination for sport, while contributing to tourism and the local economy,” Devonport City Council Mayor, Alison Jarman said.

“We are proud to sponsor and host the 2025 Tasmanian Championships in Devonport as part of Tasmania’s tennis calendar. This sponsorship demonstrates our commitment to fostering world-class sporting events in our region, which not only showcases elite talent but also delivers significant flow on benefits to our community.”

Tournaments being held in northern Tasmania are scheduled as follows:

Monday 27 January 2025 Burnie Junior International ITF
Monday 3 February 2025 Launceston Junior International ITF
Monday 10 February 2025 Tasmanian Championships $20k, Devonport
