Our recommended activity for Term 3 Tennis in Secondary Schools is Wide Open. Here’s a recap of the key components of this perfect activity for Term 3 as listed on Page 52 of the Tennis for Secondary Schools Resource:
- Students are in pairs playing across the net from each other, each with a hoop in front of them.
- Student A commences rally by projecting the ball in an overarm throwing action to Student B, aiming for the hoop in front of their partner.
- Student B tracks movement of the ball and allows it to bounce once before returning the ball with a forehand or backhand, directed back at the hoop in front of their partner.
- Students are aiming to land the ball in the hoop, it must bounce at least once and if it bounces in the hoop the pair score a point.
- The teacher indicates an appropriate amount of time or a number of points the pairs are to achieve.
TIP – a regression for this activity is for students to play cooperatively with the option of trapping the ball against the strings of their racquet with their hand, before returning with a “drop & hit” action. You could also add another hoop to make the target area bigger.
