Locals don’t need to go far to see more world-class tennis talent on show in Tasmania this summer, with the HCi Burnie International in full swing on the north west’s doorstep, from Sunday, 28 January to Sunday, 11 February 2024.
This year’s lineup includes notables like the current world No. 71 Rinky Hijikata, Australian Open qualifier Dane Sweeney, the Australian Open mixed doubles semi-finalist Marc Polmans, and the 2024 Australian Open junior girls’ singles champion, Renata Jamrichova.
Played on hardcourts at the Burnie Tennis Club, the HCi Burnie International features players from both the Men’s ATP Challenger Tour and the Women’s ITF World Tennis Tour.
“The talent displayed here is not far behind the level of the Australian Open and having this tournament in Burnie is not only great for the local economy and spectators, but it’s also inspirational for young Tasmanian athletes,” Chairman of the Burnie International Organising Committee, Anthony Johnstone said.
The Burnie International is also beneficial to the players who use the tournament as a stepping stone following the Australian Open.
“The Burnie International is more than just a tournament; it’s a crucial stepping stone for players looking to kickstart their season after the Australian Open and prepare for the European summer circuit,” Burnie International Tournament Director, Andrew Reynolds said.
“It’s intimate, it’s close and everyone is thrilled to be here. It’s a fantastic opportunity for locals and tourists to see some world-class tennis here in the north of Tasmania over the next two weeks,” he said.
