Well, it didn’t cost Legana Tennis Club as much as it could’ve, to resurface two courts, upgrade their lighting and replace fencing. Thanks to the support of local council, and a well earned grant, through the ‘Improving the Playing Field’ program, Legana TC were able to achieve the upgrades far sooner than would’ve otherwise been possible.

The club moved to the current site at the Fulton St recreation ground in the mid-1970’s, when the clay courts were installed. Since then, they have not been resurfaced, and have survived only with maintenance efforts by club members. Marcel Kerrison – president at the time of the grant application – said it took ‘2 years, a big word count, and tremendous teamwork’ to get the application over the line. Given the impressive upgrade to the new synthetic courts, the club are confident in an increase in memberships and court hire in the coming months and years. Current president, Andrew Faulkner, said they have ‘already seen an increase in memberships and feedback and been resoundingly positive’

At the recent opening event for the developments Faulkner said ‘new courts, and lights mean we can play tennis more often through the year’. With less weather and daylight interruptions, Legana Tennis Club will have a lot more court time to advantage of, and appeal to new members.

Members are also happy with the upgrade. Ros Burr, current committee member and club member since 1980, said the upgrades were reward for the thousands of volunteer hours donated by the committee for fundraising activities, grant writing, and maintenance efforts.

‘Members will be delighted to be able to walk on the court and play, without the need to water, broom and push the heavy roller around first’ – Mrs Burr
