As the last ball was struck to conclude another fantastic B&E Clarence Open we would like to congratulate first time winners Daniel Groom and Sanyukta Singh for their stellar play throughout the three days of tennis action.

Singh who has been working tirelessly with national academy head coach Simon Youl is really coming of age, not dropping a set en-route to the title. In perhaps the boil-over of the tournament Singh dispatched good friend and defending champion Catherine Krueger in a stunning display of power and timing. Awaiting Singh in the final was regular hitting partner Vanessa Dobson who squeaked past rising star Eliane Fader in two tense tie breaks. Continuing where she left off Singh was insurmountable, constantly pressuring and attacking Dobson’s weaknesses in front of a generous crowd in attendance.

In the ever unpredictable men’s draw you can always count on a high quality performance from sixteen year old top seed Daniel Groom. After many of his seeded foes were bundled out in the opening rounds Groom proved to be a cut above the rest, using his impressive speed and counter punching style to capture his first Clarence Open title. Groom was set a stern test by Ulverstone young gun Ben Cawston after Cawston claimed a three hour marathon victory over Shaun Thomas in what was described at the match of the tournament. After navigating through the battle worn Cawston, South African born Sean Oosthuizen awaited in the final after his dispatch over giant killing Bailey Horne. In the final Groom was simply too good, running Oosthuizen ragged in his straight sets victory.

On claiming the Clarence title’s both Singh and Groom will receive $740 as well as crucial Australian rankings points for their efforts. The duo will shortly team up to represent Tasmania in the 2015 Pizzey Cup championships set for Hobart in May.

In doubles action Groom partnered Thomas Youl to eke out a doubles triumph after twice falling a set behind in their route to the final. Due to the withdrawal of South Australian David Abfalter the Groom/Youl tandem were handed the victory in a disappointment to many. On the women’s side Catherine Krueger was able to recapture her form in claiming the doubles title with singles finalist Vanessa Dobson. The duo proved far too strong for Erin Fazackerley and Jessica Fowler in a big hitting final.

Thanks to all involved for once again making the B&E Clarence Open a great success! Our next stop on the calendar hits Launceston as we get ready for the TTA Easter Championships Open and Junior Bronze combined event.
