After a week full of action packed tennis at both the Stringlab Hobart Junior Championships and TTA Launceston Junior Championships the second term school holiday tournaments are in the books.

Junior stand out’s William Gibson and Chelsea Leggett, who are set to depart for Darwin next month for the prestigious Bruce Cup Championships, had a breakout week making deep runs in Hobart before claiming inaugural singles titles in Launceston.

Gibson, who reached the semi final of singles and final of doubles with Oscar Targett in Hobart, had a breakthrough week playing some breathtaking tennis capped off by a singles and doubles title in Launceston. Playing at his home club, Gibson was able to use his local knowledge, not dropping a set en-route to his first singles title. Carrying on from this momentum Gibson then teamed with Jed Plunkett-Smith to claim the doubles final over Sam Whitehead and Sam Edger in two supremely competitive sets.

Leggett on the other hand was just happy to be able to play in Launceston after having to withdraw from her semi-final in Hobart after appearing to injure her Achilles. Thankfully the injury turned out to be minor and Leggett was able to play in Launceston, dropping only a handful of games before sealing her title with an impressive display against top seeded Lucy Jones. Leggett is peaking at the perfect time with the Bruce Cup less than a month away.

All in all the Stringlab Hobart Junior Championships and TTA Launceston Junior Championships were a big success with some scintillating tennis played throughout the week of tennis. There was over 170 players in attendance over these two winter events with all players braving the elements throughout the week.

Thanks to all organisers, officials, players and parents for once again making these tournaments a sucess with some outstanding play and behaviour on hand. Our next rankings event is split between Rosny and Sorell Tennis Clubs during the August 30-31 weekend. Entries are open to this White rankings event to to enter now click here.
