21 November 2013 | Tennis Tasmania

Thanks to all players involved in the End of Year Championships held at the Domain Tennis Centre November 2-3rd. Overall it was a great weekends play in contrasting conditions.

The Medibank Junior Development Series (MJDS) component of the weekends festivities kicked off on a beautiful Spring day in Hobart. Players from 9/U through 15/U took part in this invitation only event through their standout results during the 2013 MJDS calendar. Overall there were twenty tournaments throughout Tasmania providing a crucial platform for first time tournament players.

The hotly contested 9/U boys were up first with the future of Tasmanian tennis on display. After squeaking through his group play Launceston standout Jake Elmer prevailed over young gun Riley Pattie 8-3. On the girls side it was Victoria Fish claiming a hard fought 8-4 decision over Danica Holloway in a game played under exemplary sportsmanship.

11/U events were next up with Jericho native Georgina Fish following her sister (Victoria) by defeating Burnie resident Arnaka Bourn 8-2. Again the great quality of play shows that Tasmanian tennis is in very good stead. On the boys side it was Samuel Edgar who prevailed over Siddhant Kohli in a high energy fast paced final.

With eight Foundation Cup spots (4 boys, 4 girls) up for grabs, the stakes couldn’t get much higher. After both storming through their group rounds it was Benjamin Cawston who came from a set down to defeat Samuel Elliston-Buckley 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 in a match played in a frantic pace. On the girls side it was Jessica Fowler prevailing over Lucy Jones in a great display of power and timing. For Fowler and Cawston they both receive all expenses paid trips to Melbourne for the 2014 Australian Made Foundation Cup.

15/U boys were last to hit the courts with some outstanding skills on display. In the end the final was a family affair with Joab Littler prevailing over brother Daniel  by a 6-1, 6-4 scoreline. It was great to see the match played in such high spirits with Daniel conceding Joab was better on the day.

In contrast Sunday greeted players with ice cold temperatures and rain delays in extremely testing conditions. The competitions component of the championships was being displayed on Sunday with the Super 10s, Junior Tasmanian Tennis League (TTL) and adult Tasmanian Tennis League (TTL). Each of the three regions were well represented in the days festivities with the junior and adult TTL playing off for the inaugural Tasmanian Tennis League Shield.

In the end it was the South proving too strong by comfortably accounting for the North and North-West in a high quality, entertaining environment. Congratulations to the following players from the South for claiming this prestigious title.

Adult TTL – Stuart Armstrong, Nicholas Fader, Catherine Krueger, Kathryn Easther

Junior TTL  Remy Lynch, Henry Ostler, Eliane Fader, Charlotte Ingram

Last up was the Super 10s representative game played between the South and North in a mouthwatering display of future talent. With so much depth in this 10/U group is wasn’t a surprise that the two regions were unable to be separated with a draw the result.

National Coach – Tasmania Simon Youl stated “Finishing in a tie was the perfect result for the day. All players were competing their hearts out in extremely tough conditions. Well done to all players.”
