The 7th Medibank Junior Development Series tournament of 2013 took place over the weekend at the Cygnet Tennis Club. Like all events held in Cygnet there was great community involvement and a great atmosphere in the quaint little town.
Play kicked off on a brisk Saturday morning with singles action. In the hotly contested 11 & U Boys Singles, the final was contested between regular doubles partners Samuel Edgar and Samuel Noffke. After dropping the opening set Edgar was able to eek out a hard fought 4-6, 6-1, 10-2 victory and claim the title. Noted for his great sportsmanship and attitude Edgar was later nominated for the Medibank Healthy Attitude Awards with a chance to win a trip to the Australian Open!
Next up was the 11/13 & U Girls singles event which produced some great quality play. In the end it was Ella Visser who reigned supreme with convincing performances throughout. This is Visser’s second Medibank JDS title of 2013 and with this title Visser now sits atop the girls 13 & U points race for the end of year championships in November.
To round out the singles events the 13/15 & U combined singles provided some great play throughout. Travelling all the way from Launceston it was James Nation who proved victorious with a 6-2, 6-0 dispatch of Tom Ashlin in the final. Like Visser the win has catapulted Nation to the top of the ever important 13 & U boys singles race with the top eight players qualifying for the prestigious Foundation Cup playoffs.
Capping off a fantastic day of tennis the 13 & U boys and girls competed in a few rounds of mixed doubles. This great initiative provided players to socialize with their peers whilst playing competitively. After all the rounds were concluded it was James Nation and Rebecca Flinn prevailing in the final over Jack Brereton and Ella Visser 6-4, 6-1. The mixed event was a player and parent favourite with its social and fun format.
Lastly it must be noted that Ella Brereton from the Cygnet Tennis Club has also been nominated for the Medibank Healthy Attitude Awards. Ella’s sportsmanship and attitude were exemplary with her constantly partaking in fair play and a healthy attitude. When the tournament had concluded it was Ella who helped pack everything away and clean up around the grounds.
A big thanks to all who made this tournament possible and thanks to all players and parents. Your commitment to these tournaments makes them such a success.
See you all shortly for the upcoming Devonport Medibank JDS on June 16
