The Port Pirie & Districts Tennis Association was founded in 1961 to service clubs locally in Port Pirie and surrounding areas. These included Risdon Recreation, Railway Pennant, Risdon Uniting, Trinity, Baptist, Pirie East and Pirie. Later joined at times by Nurom, Wanderah, Pt Germain and Napperby in the surrounding districts.
Courts at each of the associated clubs varied in age and as a result, in the mid 1970’s, negotiations were entered into with the Port Pirie and Districts Regional Council for the development of a tennis complex. The association played its first tennis matches at the centre in late 1982. Demand resulted in expansion from the original 10 courts to the current 21.
Operation of the Port Pirie & District Tennis Association currently still has a number of these original clubs competing in senior, junior and social competition. Recent highlights include acting as host to the Port Pirie International Tennis Tournament 26 times, siginficant representation in state and national level Foundation Cup tournaments over the years, management and organisation of local junior tournaments to provide opportunities to compete for points in a regional centre.
