In a much hyped match between two of the conference heavy weights it was the Launceston Cobras who powered their way to a tight yet comfortable win over the Burnie Broncos in front of a generous crowd at the Burnie Tennis Club. Both teams entered the match undefeated with the high octane line up of red hot James Bolzonello, fellow Tasmanian Tennis Academy director Jeff Speer and college bound Ross Marzetti proving too much for the Broncos, who fought out every match, with the score line not showing the closeness of the encounter.

Recent Hobart Open semi-finalist James Bolzonello shook off a pesky Bronco in Connor Parke at the top singles position to give the Cobras a perfect start. After needing a tie-break to claim the first set Bolzonello gained confidence in his return game blanketing Parke in the second set. The Broncos were able to tie things up at 1-1 with the doubles combination of Tyler Johnstone and Jason Marian squeaking past Jeff Speer and Ross Marzetti in a tense super tie-break.

From here on out it was all Cobras as they claimed the final four matches with three of the four going the distance into a third and deciding set. You would be a brave man to count out the Broncos, with their marquee player Robert Easther also returning from overseas this weekend.

With the win the Cobras sit atop the conference with a perfect two wins with the Broncos moving from first to third following the loss. The matchup this weekend between the Broncos and the Rams will likely decide the final position to move forward to the semi-finals.

In Saturdays other match between the winless Launceston Rams and Trevallyn Titans it was the Rams, behind some stellar play from Scott Jones, who claimed a hard fought win over the Ken Ho led Titans. In front of a raucous, predominately Trevallyn crowd the turning point behind this encounter came in the second set of matches with the match tied. Ben Barnett started things in the best possible manner for the Rams playing an almost flawless match in handily defeating the most experienced Andrew Roberts. With regular doubles duo Andrew Youl and Scott Jones taking care of business the Rams never looked back en-route to a 4-2 advantage.

All of the South conference matches were abandoned yesterday due to inclement weather with all teams a chance to make the much anticipated finals in a few weeks’ time. Team results from the weekend are as follows;
