The team was overpowering on the first day of play only dropping one set out of twelve. On day 2 they continued to play a high level of tennis, with Eastern Region proving too strong in the first rubber. Barwon came home strong to win the 2nd rubber against Waverley, finishing third overall.
All players were outstanding, but doubles pair Taylah Mielczarek and James Thorne proved to be too strong, dominating the whole weekend. Parents and the team manager were delighted with the effort and behaviour of all the players.
Victorian Country Inter-regional Championships
The BARWON Region has once again stamped its authority on the State after claiming its fourth straight Victorian Inter-Regional crown. The R e g i o n was awarded the championship after the finals were called off due to rain however, the result was hardly in doubt. Whether it was singles, doubles or mixed doubles the Barwon players were able to performat their best and were scheduled to play in the majority of the cancelled finals. Their dominance was best highlighted by Ari Levinson and James Brushfield who would have had to face each other in the under-18 boys’ final. Captain Mick Mullen said the doubles teams were the catalyst. ‘‘Our doubles teams played really well which was good because we didn’t do as well in the singles as we did last year,’’ he said. The region has now won 10 of the past 12 Championships.
Foundation Cup 2011
On November 13th and 14th Barwon Region girls Nicole Mullen, Georgia Kelly, Taylah Mielczarek and Tamika Hider competed at Bairnsdale for the title of Foundation Cup. In very warm conditions on the Sunday the girls won their three rubbers against Mornington Peninsula, East Gippsland and Goulburn to be eligible for the playoff for 1st and 2nd place with Central Highlands. In a tight first set where the lead changed several times Nicole Mullen stormed home with great strength and consistency to overpower Hannah Heath 7-5, 6-1 in her singles final. Georgia Kelly was making her comeback after a seven month injury layoff. Although she fought gallantly, went down to Samantha Hucker 6-4, 7-5.
Our two outstanding performers were Taylah Mielczarek and Tamika Hider who showed great endurance and consistency to go through the whole tournament without dropping one set. Taylah winning her singles final against Anna Pryse-Smith 6-1, 6-2 and Tamika taking out her singles against Caitlin Keall 6-2, 6-2. All girls enjoyed the weekend immensely and played with great team spirit and camaraderie.
