Tennis NT CEO Tania Tandora and Head of Tennis Sam Giess were happy to be back in Nhulunbuy again, this time to attend the Gove Peninsula Tennis Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The 3-court club continues it’s reign as the “biggest smallest club in Australia” boasting many achievements driven by the club’s committee, community, and club President Nicky Mayer.
Club reporting from the 2025 calendar year:
- Membership: 300 members which is approx 10% of the town’s population.
- Junior Coaching Participants: 130 kids, 45% female / 55% male.
Cardio Tennis: mammoth 108 individuals with a 65% female 35% male. - Social Tennis: 40 players.
- Pickleball: 60 players
Club programs and highlights:
Racquets and Red Dust: club President Nicky Mayer and the Tennis NT team travelled to Dhalingbuy to train youth workers based in surrounding homelands in delivering tennis. Read more….
National Indigenous Tennis Carnival: the trip to Dhalingbuy led to six kids being selected from communities across Dhalingbuy, GanGan and Wurrawuy to join with town-kids to create the first team from East Arnhem to compete at the National Indigenous Tennis Carnival. That East Arnhem team won the Hot Shots (red ball) competition; team supervisor Djamika won the Roger Cawley Supervisors Award; and Manimba from Gan Gan was selected to the First Nations Ballkid program at the Australian Open 2026 – WOW! Lead2Lead: 2 girls from the club graduated from the Learn2Lead program. A program designed to grow the next generation of sporting leaders in the NT.
School Sport Training Camp: 2 club juniors travelled to Darwin to compete at the School Sport event.
Club Volunteer of the Year: Ray Winn was awarded the club volunteer of the year.
Club Of The Year: Gove Peninsula Tennis Club won this award at the Tennis NT Annual Awards Night.
The AGM concluded with the re-appointment of President Nicky Mayer, and the appointment of a further 6 people to the committee, returning and new.
