From Monday, December 1st, to Wednesday, December 3rd, the Tennis NT team successfully executed a vital three-day visit to Groote Eylandt, led by Tennis NT’s Talent & Coach Manager, Martin Rocca. The primary mission was to actively promote and embed tennis within local schools and Aboriginal communities, fostering new opportunities for participation.
Over 150 children, aged between 5 and 16, engaged in high-quality tennis sessions hosted across the Angurugu Sports Hub and the Alyangula Area School. A key highlight of the visit was the powerful collaboration with Tennis Australia Aboriginal coach Anzac Leidig and the community association Bush Fit Mob. This partnership allowed Tennis NT to upskill local teachers, providing them with the expertise and drills necessary to sustainably run tennis exercises and familiarize students with the fundamentals of the sport long after the visit concluded.
The team also traveled to Umbakumba, where they delivered training sessions for over 40 children. To ensure continued participation, the school was provided with essential equipment, including new racquets and tennis apparel, leaving a lasting legacy for the community’s burgeoning tennis interest.
Thank you to all who helped bring this together to make a lasting tennis impact in the Groote Eylandt community, strengthening the First Nations pathway and opportunities for players to come to Darwin for the National Indigenous Tennis Carnival in August 2026!
