At its Annual General Meeting on Saturday 5 November 2011, Patrick Coburn was recommended for Life Membership of Tennis NT.
The response was unanimous and Patrick was presented with his award at the Annual Presentation Dinner that same night.
The following testament was tabled at the Annual General Meeting.
Pat Coburn is a deserving recipient of the honour of Life Membership of Tennis NT.
Pat was born in Tennant Creek and finished his education in Adelaide where he achieved an Economics Degree.
On completing his Degree Pat returned to the Northern Territory in 1986 where he took up a coaching position at, what was then called the Darwin Tennis Centre, now DTC Sports.
From that time Pat worked hard to develop the wholly private tennis centre into a thriving business. For the most part his efforts were met with success. When times were tough, as all businesses experience, Pat diversified, always with the intent that tennis would be the beneficiary.
To his credit Pat has run DTC Sports as a most successful business, both financially and for the participants.
His tennis credentials include:
– Vice-President of Tennis NT: 1997-2003; 2005-current
– Served for five years on Tennis Australia’s Tennis Participation and Industry Committee
– Talent Development Coach (one of only 83 nationally)
– Qualified Club Pro Coach
– Winner of the Northern Territory Sports Awards Coach of the Year in 2004 and again in 2009
– Winner of the TCA National Coaching Award for Excellence in 2004
– Finalist at the inaugural Newcombe Medal Tennis Awards in 2010 for the category Coaching Excellence – Club
– Member of the NTIS Tennis Joint Management Committee
– Served on Tennis NT’s Participation and Player Development Committee
– Served as a selector on Tennis NT’s Selections Committee
– Regular presenter at National Forums including the 2011 Australian Grand Slam Coaches Conference
– Published articles in Australian Tennis Magazine
– Sponsors all Coach Education Courses and Professional Development Workshops held at DTC Sports
– Sponsors Nationals Incentive Program for junior athletes
– Provides a training centre for National Academy Coach visits
– Mentored many coaches to qualify and maintain their accreditation. Pat has invested heavily in this area and boasts a team of 13 well trained and motivated coaches at DTC Sports
– Instrumental in developing visionary Affiliation Reform in the NT (a similar concept is currently being piloted in South Australia)
– Coached a number of athletes to achieve high levels including National Champions and recipients of the highly valued Collegiate of American University Tennis Scholarships
– He has sacrificed his personal life to travel with Northern Territory representative teams on many occasions, sometimes for 3 weeks duration
– Invests heavily in Tennis NT’s Annual Presentation Dinner to ensure its success
Pat is a worthy recipient of Life Membership.
