{"id":9738,"date":"2015-01-02T08:42:22","date_gmt":"2015-01-02T00:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=9738"},"modified":"2015-01-02T08:42:22","modified_gmt":"2015-01-02T00:42:22","slug":"home-town-heroes-matt-ebden-to-replace-nick-kyrgios-at-hopman-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2015\/01\/02\/home-town-heroes-matt-ebden-to-replace-nick-kyrgios-at-hopman-cup","title":{"rendered":"Home Town Heroes &#8211; Matt Ebden to replace Nick Kyrgios at Hopman Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2015\/01\/Casey-Matt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9739\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2015\/01\/Casey-Matt.jpg\" alt=\"Casey &amp; Matt'\" width=\"410\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>World No.52 <strong>Nick Kyrgios<\/strong> has been forced to withdraw from the 27th annual Hopman Cup due to a back injury and will be replaced by Western Australia\u2019s own<strong> Matt Ebden.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ebden will team up with<strong> Casey Dellacqua<\/strong>, the first Western Australian duo to play the event in its history.<\/p>\n<p>Kyrgios, 19, had a breakthrough year in 2014 advancing to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon before reaching a career high ranking of 51 in September.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m disappointed that I have to withdraw from the Hopman Cup,\u201d Kyrgios said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing selected for your country is always a privilege and I wish I could be there. I&#8217;ll be watching from home and of course will be cheering on Casey and Matt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to be able to play at the Hopman Cup one day in the future,\u201d Kyrgios added.<\/p>\n<p>Ebden, the former world No.61, won the Australian Open mixed doubles title in 2013 and has captured four career doubles titles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that Nick has had to withdraw but I can\u2019t express how honoured and excited I am to represent Australia at the Hopman Cup,\u201d Ebden said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up as a junior in Perth, the Hopman Cup was our event. It was the tournament I went to when I was younger and it was one that I always wanted to play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am pumped to play alongside Casey, another West Australian and someone I have known for many, many years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be the first time two West Australian\u2019s will play together at the Hopman Cup so I hope the Perth public can get out and support both of us,\u201d Ebden continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough this is disappointing news about Nick, we hope he recovers quickly and wish him all the best. We will miss him in Perth but I\u2019m very pleased Matt, who is a hometown favourite, is able to wear the green and gold and play for Australia,\u201d <strong>Paul Kilderry<\/strong>, Hopman Cup Tournament Director added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will have nine top 20 players including four top ten players here in Perth and we can\u2019t wait for all the action to begin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hopman Cup 2015 is the official mixed team competition of the ITF and is proudly supported locally by the State Government, through Tourism WA.
