{"id":9617,"date":"2014-11-20T07:37:26","date_gmt":"2014-11-19T23:37:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=9617"},"modified":"2014-11-20T07:37:26","modified_gmt":"2014-11-19T23:37:26","slug":"dellacquas-career-best-season-recognised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2014\/11\/20\/dellacquas-career-best-season-recognised","title":{"rendered":"Dellacqua\u2019s Career-best Season Recognised"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9618\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2014\/11\/Casey1.jpg\" alt=\"Casey\" width=\"410\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not too many players produce\u00a0their career-best season at age 29.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it\u2019s an age when many players are starting to wind back their careers rather than making impressive strides into unchartered waters.<\/p>\n<p>Casey Dellacqua began season 2014 as the world\u2019s 142nd player, but cracked the top 30 for the first time \u2013 peaking at world No.26 \u2013 after an exceptionally consistent season highlighted by Grand Slam success.<\/p>\n<p>These milestones have helped her be nominated as a finalist for the Newcombe Medal, awarded to Australia\u2019s most outstanding elite tennis player for the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great honour to be nominated as one of the finalists for the Newcombe Medal,\u201d she\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always a great night with all the current and past Australian players together in one room, and I\u2019m looking forward to getting to Melbourne. Since the award was introduced in 2010 it has been highly regarded by the Australian players, particularly since Newk was such an icon of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dellacqua joins Sam Stosur, Lleyton Hewitt and Nick Kyrgios as finalists for the medal. And her achievements in 2014 stack up very well against the competition.<\/p>\n<p>Her run to the fourth round at Melbourne Park as a wildcard was followed by an appearance in the last 16 at the US Open, her best ever performance at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>And there was plenty of success at WTA events around the globe as well. She enjoyed a semifinal finish at the Premier-level in Birmingham \u2013 her best ever WTA result \u2013 as well as quarterfinals at Indian Wells and Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>A third-round finish in Wuhan helped push her to a career-high ranking of 26th in September.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the season\u00a0she enjoyed wins over higher-ranked opponents such as Stosur, Sabine Lisicki, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Kirsten Flipkens and Roberta Vinci, and combined with compatriot Ash Barty to win the doubles title in Strasbourg and final in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>Her results were recognised by the women\u2019s tour, which nominated her for the WTA Most Improved Player Award for 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><a title=\"Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/news-and-events\/events\/newcombe-medal\" target=\"_blank\">Find out more<\/a> about the Newcombe Medal Australian Tennis Awards, to be held on Monday 24 November at the Palladium Ballroom at Melbourne\u2019s Crown Entertainment Complex.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not too many players produce\u00a0their career-best season at age 29.
