{"id":8186,"date":"2014-01-03T08:29:40","date_gmt":"2014-01-03T00:29:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=8186"},"modified":"2014-01-03T08:29:40","modified_gmt":"2014-01-03T00:29:40","slug":"aussies-fall-to-poland-in-thrilling-doubles-decider","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2014\/01\/03\/aussies-fall-to-poland-in-thrilling-doubles-decider","title":{"rendered":"Aussies fall to Poland in thrilling doubles decider"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2014\/01\/Tomic-Stosur-700x450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8187\" alt=\"Tomic-Stosur-700x450\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2014\/01\/Tomic-Stosur-700x450-410x263.jpg\" width=\"410\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s live mixed doubles rubber loss at the Hopman Cup to Poland has sent the Poles into the final ahead of Canada in Perth.<\/p>\n<p>Bernard Tomic tried his best but ultimately couldn\u2019t do his good friend Milos Raonic a favour as Poland sealed a place in the Hopman Cup final in thrilling style.<\/p>\n<p>Poland only needed to win a set in the mixed doubles against Australia to secure a spot in the decider.<\/p>\n<p>That looked to be a tough task after the No.1 seeds lost the first set 6-1 in 18 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>But Australia\u2019s pairing of Tomic and Sam Stosur conceded a tight second set, meaning Poland advanced to the final instead of Canada\u2019s team of Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard.<\/p>\n<p>Poland went on to win the tie 2-1 after prevailing in the mixed doubles 1-6 7-5 10-8 (match tiebreak).<\/p>\n<p>France will also secure a spot in the final if they can beat Spain on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, Stosur put up a dogged fight in the women\u2019s singles rubber before succumbing to world No.5 Agnieszka Radwanska 3-6 6-4 6-3 in front of 9789 fans at Perth Arena.<\/p>\n<p>That came after Tomic recorded a 6-1 6-4 win over Grzegorz Panfil.<\/p>\n<p>Radwanska needed an injury time out midway through the second set to receive treatment on her heavily-strapped right shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>But the 24-year-old bounced back strongly, levelling the match at one set apiece before securing the win in 143 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Stosur lost all three of her singles matches but says the mixed-teams tournament was better for her preparation than the Brisbane International, where she made a first-round exit last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though I\u2019ve had three losses compared to one loss in Brisbane, I do feel better at this stage,\u201d Stosur said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have loved to have won them all, or even one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m getting that match play. I\u2019m having some long matches, which is exactly what I need at this point in time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomic won two of his three singles matches and felt he was well prepared to defend his Sydney International title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy with this confidence leaving for Sydney,\u201d Tomic said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I have the chance to start the tournament well there I think I can defend it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s a lot of good players during Sydney, I\u2019ve got to prepare well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m ready for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Radwanska said her shoulder injury was something she needed to manage, but wouldn\u2019t be an issue for the final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had issues with the shoulder for a long time now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a little bit sore and tight. But I was able to continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a tendon. I\u2019m getting inflamed as well.
